Italy
Well as its near the end of 2009, I thought i should finish off posting pics of our trip to Europe last year.
I did manage to squeeze in a VW event or two, But first we zipped over to Italy.
But he wasnt answering so we went for a gelati and a little look around.
Not much else was going on in Rome so we bugged out.
Back in the UK, the next day was Bug Jam.
So it was up early and up the M1.
And chrome fuchs tuck, like art!
More Barca.
So just down the road from the rooftop of La Pedrera was the extended construction site that is the Temple De La Sagrada Familia. Quite amazingly Antoni Gaudi started construction on this amazing gothic piece in 1882 and work still continues today. Ive heard all sorts of finish dates for this project, maybe 2020 but no ones holding their breath.
Judging by the biblical ques outside the front door, Id think financially the building company wouldnt want to finish, really and if you take a look around, construction seems to roll at a very moderate pace and coming from an Australian, that must be a pretty slow pace indeed. But all good things hey........I suppose.
Inside, nice cornice work there, Ant.
Hey when's lunch?
Ominous
Early days of construction
Few! what a day. I think I need a little lie down.
Buenas Notches Barcelona
Seems Barcelona has turned into quite a tourist magnet, but its still a fantastic city. It was pretty warm while we were there so we usually only surfaced early in the morning and at night to find more good food and cool spots to do some nocturnal street drinking.
Barcelona bound
So it was a quick drive back to the chateau for a bite and some veno before we had to head out to the med coast and Barcelona...
This is a pass we drove across in Northern Spain called 'mirador del bac de divi'. From my very poor Spanish I think it means southern border or somthing similar. Anyway the roads were excelent and no one on them.
So we made it into the centre of Barcelona, we found the approximate area just off the Ramblas were our hotel was, the problem was finding a parking spot. We drove round for ages aggravating the local traffic police with my distinctly ozzie driving style. In the end we decided to pay the $50 and park in a underground park facility.
Who said Spain was cheap!
We ended up metres from our hotel and imediately got bumped to the penthouse cos aparently there was plumbing problems with our povo pack room.
Who said the Spanish were cheap?
This was the view from our apartment window. Well at least we were high enough to catch the breeze as it was pretty warm in Barca when we got there and they were in the midst of an extended drought I am told.
This was the best view from the other window though.
Oh yeah and happy new year, lets try and make it better hey!
Biarritz an Busted
So we thought we should get to the coast, cos I hadnt seen the ocean for about fifteen fortnights.
The drive across France to the Atlantic wos a bit boring so I had a little snooze on the way over.
These modern Peugeot drive so good.
Shame.
A cool local we met swimming at the beach one morning.
Double pluggers,,,,, right on!
Pyrenees 2
Out for a drive in the hills! But of course! What else do you do when in the hills in France.
Nice crepe's and you just cant beat that view!
This pic might look familiar to you tour fans.
I picked up this cool cycle for 10 euros. Supreme and all og except for some brand new michy's.
Now which way to Paris?
It awaits its turn to be restored by me.
The Peugot 404 wagen was a fantastic design and along with the volkswagen beetle were the 2 cars that effectively broke the camels back in much of Africa. Indeed you still see them in Africa today. When I was in Egypt 20 years ago just about all the taxis were 404's. The wagens had a unique designed torque tube live rear axle, with low gearing and light weight they were extremely comfortable and not to shabby off road as well.
Pyrenees 1
Our pad in the Pyrenees. Yeah but its nice inside.
So when the shops opened, we decided wed better drive down to the supermarket and pick up some grub.
We were going to buy alot of stuff so we took the big car, but damn foods expensive so we just got a couple things.
They got some funny food here in France'
And some beer to wash it all down with. Bon apetit!
London Town 4
One guess.
Taking Tea, well maybe afternoon coffee.
Strange as it may seem, us coffee drinkers are always searching for the next good coffee. I guess its like any addiction, satisfaction is only guaranteed if the substance meets certain personal criteria. In the case of coffee, presentation, surroundings and aroma are almost as important as that first slirp. And here lies the dilema.
During our time in Europe we were always on the look out for a good cafe. Unfortunately we found the French just used too little bean, generally so did the Italians, even the Spanish failed to make the grade for us.
So yes the best coffee in Europe is surprisingly enough across the road from The Ritz in London.
But and I cant be 100% here,,, I still think,,, Fremantle coffee takes the gold medal.
London Town 3
Just superb in a monotonous London kinda way.
And spotted this,,,, R8's are everywhere!
So I thought I should buy me a Dylan bio. But which one today?
Yep Piccadilly Circus is specially cool at night when the mobs have all gone home.
Now I want one of these things
And remind me, next time I go to a Moto GP, to ride. Took me 5 hours to get outa this mess.
